Topcat Mole/Vole Trap

I love the Topcat vole/mole trap! Some years we have had lots of our potatoes and carrots eaten by voles, as well as some munching of beans and bean plants. This sturdy trap is well worth the investment. In the last month or so that I have had my trap, I have caught 9 voles and 2 moles in my vegetable/fruit garden. To make the trap more stable and more protected from false triggers, we took a small flat square of wood and cut a hole in the middle the size of the tube. With the tube through the hole, the wood sits on top of the ground, holding the trap more steady and hiding the light. I put small pieces of cardboard around the edges and cover with dirt to further screen light from the trap placement and keep dirt from falling down into the tunnel. I use a shish kebab stick to help probe for tunnel locations. When you have dug your hole down into the tunnel, be sure to use your fingers to clean out the tunnel openings underground as much as you can from the dirt you will have spilled into them when digging your hole. This helps to avoid false triggers when a vole or mole needs to push soil around to clear the tunnel, and the soil triggers the trap. Happy hunting, and enjoy your produce!

Like other reviewers, I've conducted all sorts of high-tech, low-tech, and chemical warfare on against my voles and moles. Over the past 5 years I have tried 6 traps from different manufacturers. The TopCat is one of two that I still use. If I do a good job locating and placing the trap, it will get the kill. (Can't blame the trap if it's not in the right place.) I have found that baiting the hole with a few mealworms increases my odds. (That statement may not hold up empirically, but mole hunting is both an art and a science.) Yes, the TopCat is expensive. But it's built (and engineered) like a battleship and will last for many years. And here's a bonus: recently I had to contact the manufacturer about adjusting the trigger. I got a response to my email within 24 hours, they diagnosed the issue, send me additional documentation, and described how to do the adjustment. So add excellent customer service (4 years after purchase) to the benefits of buying a TopCat.

I have use granules, sprays, smoke bombs, poison worms, and various traps for the moles. No success. The TOPCAT stainless steel cylinder traps are the best by far. No chemicals, easy to set, easy to remove the dead mole without touching it! Extremely reliable. I have caught over 40 moles with one trap and the trap still works great. I just rinse dirt out every month or two and let it completely dry before resetting it. Great product!!

Very good trap. Works well. Easier to get the voles than wait untill they come to the surface. Trap is of good quality. Sometimes the voles push dirt in it, so you need to clean it occasionally.

My first time with this product...fantastic! I set the trap the first 5 times, got 5 Voles, and using it in the same hole! Follow directions and you'll have no problem.

I tried repellent (helps but doesn't last) mouse traps (no success), and finally searched for best vole traps and bought two Top Cats. If you are willing to make the investment, you will have something that works the way they advertise, kills quickly and humanely, and is built to last. I really recommend the digging tool accessory to make the perfect size hole. Great product!

Expensive, but worth every penny. I'm ordering another right now. Caught two voles which had been destroying my carrot crop within twelve hours. The tunnels are everywhere, but I hope to reduce the infestation dramatically before the ground freezes.

Simple to use and highly effective

It took me two tries to catch my first vole, but I did it today. The first time I placed it, the trap tripped over night, but it caught only dirt. That tells me the vole(s) pushed or kicked dirt into the opening and tripped it. The second time I set the trap was last night. This morning it was tripped and had caught a big vole. Over the past month, I had tried two of the popular wire "pinch" traps but after several days caught nothing. I tried gassing them, using about 50 of the gas bombs, and also tried the poison pellets. Nothing worked except for this Topcat trap! It's not cheap and nobody else sells them, but they're well worth it!
